Web Home Page: The Gamkapoort Nature Reserve extends over 8 250 ha, of which about one-sixth is taken up by the Gamkapoort Dam, at the confluence of the Gamka and Dwyka rivers. Situated on the northern slopes of the Great Swartberg range, the reserve boasts some fine rugged scenery, including a deep and impressive gorge below the dam wall. Dwarf succulent shrubs grow in the low-lying areas, taller ridges and shrubs on the hill slopes, and dry montane fynbos (heath) can be seen on the highest ridges. Sweet-thorn trees form dense stands along the watercourses. Kudu, grey rhebok, springbok, klipspringer, common duiker, steenbok and rock dassie occur naturally I the area. as well as leopard and caracal. No birdlist is available but some interesting species are present. Location: Eastern part of the province; north-west of Oudtshoorn. Access: From Oudtshoorn take the R328 over the Swartberg Pass to Price Albert, and then turn west onto the gravel road to Gamkapoort Dam, continuing for 35 km. To reach Prince Albert from the N1, take the R328 south-eastwards at Prince Albert Road station. Accommodation: None, but camping may be arranged. Other facilities: A short walking trail; overnight trail; fishing, boating and picnicking permitted. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: Sunrise to sunset.
